The Picture, the Wall, the Figure - Per Kirkeby in Ribe

In January Ribe Kunstmuseum will be exhibiting works by one of heavyweights of Danish art: Per Kirkeby. Kirkeby has a quite special relationship with Ribe Kunstmuseum, which he last visited a year ago. He viewed the wall for the first time with considerable satisfaction and looked forward to seeing the bronze sculpture which he himself calls “Madonna” exhibited in the garden. Kirkeby exhibited at the museum for the first time in 1976 – and again in 1996 – and now the artist’s 80th birthday will be marked in 2018 with an exhibition on the museum’s first floor. The point of departure for the exhibition is Kirkeby’s works in the museum garden together with the funerary monument to the poet Ambrosius Stub, which is to be found in front of Saint Catherine’s Church in Ribe. The majority of the works will come from Museum Sønderjylland (The art museum in Tønder, Southern Jutland) and Museum Jorn in Silkeborg, Jutland. In addition there will also be individual works on loan from Esbjerg Kunstmuseum..
