Golden Age and Green Forests. 100 Years of Ordrupgaard
2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the private art collection, Ordrupgaard. Director of Research Wilhelm Hansen and his wife Henny opened what was then their home to art lovers, who encountered here (the work of) French Impressionists and painters from the Danish Golden Age and the breakthrough of the Modern. The anniversary will be celebrated with a kind of inverse birthday party in which Ordrupgaard’s Danish Collection comes out to the visitor instead of the other way round. At Ribe Kunstmuseum we have been establishing a tradition of exhibitions based on loans: first with The Hirschsprung Collection in 2011, then with Skagen Museum in 2012 and 2014 and most recently with Faaborg Museum in 2015. In 2018 it will be Ordrupgaard which will be the guest at Ribe Kunstmuseum with an exhibition, which, for the first time ever outside Greater Copenhagen, will present their superb collection of Danish masterpieces. Renowned paintings by Hammershøi, L.A. Ring, Eckersberg, Theodor Phillipsen and Peter Hansen are only some of the many treasures who will be paying us a visit. The exhibition Golden Age and Green Forests. 100 Years of Ordrupgaard tells the story of a family who loved life and were far-sighted collectors; who built a villa in the forest for themselves and their art – and subsequently invited the public to pay them a call! Today Ordrupgaard is a living museum entirely in the spirit of its founding family. Also in the exhibition are Ordrupgaard’s most discussed new acquisitions; White Doors by Vilhelm Hammershøi and The Goldsmith’s Workshop by L.A. Ring as well as outstanding works by French painters of the 19th century. This major loan exhibition has been made possible by Ordrupgaard’s extensive programme of rebuilding, which is scheduled to reach completion in 2019..
