Virtuoso and courageous New York jazz with the double bass at the forefront

Throughout his musical career, Jeong Lim Yang has pushed the boundaries of the ensemble format, using the double bass not only as a rhythmic anchor, but as a driving melodic force. The South Korean jazz bassist has been a prominent figure on New York's cosmopolitan jazz scene since 2011. In May, she will be visiting ALICE with her all-star quartet.

The sound of New York jazz is unmistakable: shaped by the city's intense musical environment, it is both edgy, open and searching - driven by curiosity and rapid shifts. For more than a decade, Jeong Lim Yang has explored this very sonic landscape as both a bandleader and bassist. With her characteristic approach, she places the double bass at the center, allowing it to function as both rhythmic foundation and melodic engine. In the hands of Lim Yang, the distinct New York sound takes on a personal touch, where harmonic experiments and improvisation merge into a present and dynamic expression.

Jeong Lim Yang won NPR's "Best Debut Album of the Year" award and later received critical acclaim for her bold interpretation of Mary Lou Williams' masterpiece Zodiac Suite: Reassured (Fresh Sound New Talent, 2022)Here, the classic suite was reinterpreted in a piano trio format, with the double bass in the foreground. When Lim Yang takes the stage at ALICE in May, it will be with a quartet of excellent musicians. They are currently working on the album Synchronicity (Sunnyside, 2025), which, inspired by Carl Jung's theory of synchronicity, elegantly balances traditional jazz idioms and boundary-pushing improvisation.Look forward to an intense and immersive concert experience when Jeong Lim Yang visits ALICE in May.
