In 2026, Aarhus Amateur Symphony Orchestra will celebrate no less than 100 years - and you're invited.
The anniversary will be marked with an amazing festive concert in Musikhuset in the company of the prominent pianist Tanja Zapolski, who is known as a judge in TV 2's PianoZapolski has worked with prominent conductors and musicians from both the classical and rhythmic worlds. As a soloist, she performs works from the early Baroque to contemporary compositions, electronic music and performance.
This evening features fantastic works by Peter Warlock and Modest Musorgsky, as well as Zapolski's deeply professional and personal take on George Gershwin's famous piano concerto Rhapsody in Blue.
Musical masterpieces across the centuries.
To mark the orchestra's founding year, Aarhus Amateur Symphony Orchestra opens the concert with Peter Warlock'sCapriol suitefrom 1926, which is considered Warlock's most popular work. The suite is a set of six dances, originally written for piano duet, but subsequently arranged for both strings and full symphony orchestraAccording to Warlock, the Capriol Suite is based on melodies from Thoinot Arbeau's 1589 Orchesographie, a guide to Renaissance dances, complete with step-by-step instructions, musical notation and information on tempo and style.
Look forward to Tanja Zapolski's interpretation of Gershwin's famousRhapsody in Bluefrom 1924, the story of which is almost as legendary as the work itself. Big band leader Paul Whiteman accidentally promised the press that Gershwin would write a new 'jazz concerto', even though Gershwin had actually turned down the offerWith only six weeks until the concert, Gershwin had to hastily create the work that would become Rhapsody in BlueAfter frantic composing, improvisation and last-minute orchestration, the piece was a huge success and one of the first major encounters between jazz and classical music.
The concert concludes with Modest Musorgsky's most famous work,Exhibition imagesfrom 1874. The piano work was inspired by a memorial exhibition for Musorgsky's friend, the painter Viktor Hartmann, who died suddenly at a young age. It wasn't until Maurice Ravel's brilliant orchestral version from 1922 that the work really became known and popularThe work consists of 15 small movements, 10 of which describe an image from the exhibition. The remaining four describe a "promenade" - a short interlude that depicts the viewer's walk and reaction from image to image.
