Sean Cannon has been a member of The Dubliners for close to 30 years, while Paul Shay is a new memberMeanwhile, banjo virtuoso Gerry O'Connor played with the famous Four Men and A Dog, and has played with everyone from Sharon Shannon to Shane MacGowan (The Pogues)Numerous sessions and album recordings with Barney McKenna followed, so it was only natural that he stepped in after Barney's death to help complete the ongoing tour with The Dubliners, thus brilliantly lifting Gerry onBarney's legacy in the most beautiful way.
In 2012, The Dubliners celebrated 50 years of music and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. This was followed by a completely sold-out UK tour, culminating in a magical night at The Royal Albert HallSadly, "Banjo" Barney McKenna passed away shortly afterwards, a huge blow to both fans and members of The Dubliners. Naturally, it prompted the remaining members of The Dubliners to sit down and discuss the future of the bandJohn Sheahan decided that after 50 years on the road, it was time to get off the tour bus and relax for a while.
But under the name The Dublin Legends, fellow band members Sean Cannon, Shay Kavanagh, Paul Watchorn Gerry O'Connor have decided to continue the musical legacy founded by Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Ciaran Bourke, Barney McKenna JohnSheahan back in 1962.
"It's too late to stop now", Barney once said. Sean, Eamon, Patsy Gerry have taken these wise words to heart.
