About Puccini's "Tosca"
Join us in Rome in June 1800 during the Napoleonic Wars in Europe, where a steamy love story, but also a political thriller, takes shapeThe action in "Tosca" takes place in less than 24 hours - and Puccini's music keeps the audience in suspense.
The drama plays out between the three main characters; the diva Floria Tosca, her lover, the painter and revolutionary Mario Cavaradossi, and the corrupt police chief Baron Scarpia.
Scarpia has long coveted Tosca, and when he suspects Cavaradossi is hiding a political prisoner - Angelotti - he sees an opportunity to kill two birds with one stoneHe will manipulate Tosca into revealing the prisoner's hiding place and reveal Cavaradossi's involvement in order to get Tosca for himself.
When Cavaradossi is arrested, Scarpia presents Tosca with an impossible choice: she must give herself to Scarpia or her lover will die. What will she choose? And who will survive?
"Tosca" focuses on the Italian struggle for political freedom from Napoleonic France, and along the way the opera features murder, suicide, execution and torture! The opera was first performed in Rome in 1900 and has since then - as one of the most frequently performed operas - been performed at the world's leading opera houses.
