Cancelled! Ringsted's 'wicked' theater life in the 19th century by Alette Scavenius

Ringsted Folkeuniversitet is proud to invite you to the research-based lecture "Ringsted's 'wicked' theater life in the 19th century - and other theater stories by Alette Scavenius" in Kino Kultur

Ringsted and the surrounding area are exciting in terms of theatre. In the 19th century there was a very active religious movement with a doomsday preacher who - in addition to banning alcohol - also strongly agitated against any form of entertainment. This meant that people were not allowed to sing or dance - let alone do theatre! If you went to Slagelse instead, there was a huge party with the province's largest theatre hall with space for almost 1,000 spectators.

Denmark has been an unusually active theater country since the 18th century - especially in the provinces. From Knud Lyhne Rahbek, the first dramatic company started in 1772, it flourished with theater clubs all over the country, and high and low people played immortal classics to the best of their ability - often just on five loose boards laid over two trestles.Ambitions rose both on the stage and the setting in which it was to take place, and after the Royal Theatre opened in 1874, a veritable building boom of theatres began: up to World War I in 1914, 24 newly built theatres opened in Denmark!

Speaker:
