Werther by Jules Massenet

Goethe's unhappy love story comes on a French visit to Copenhagen. Experience the suffering of young Werther firsthand at the Opera

When Goethe published his novel The Sorrows of Young Werther in the latter half of the 18th century, an entire generation was exposed to an ideal of manhood that could encompass vulnerability, powerlessness and the sorrows of love.Men were no longer just soldiers, rulers, and servants. They had the right to flirt, write poetry, show weakness, and yes, be unhappily in love.

It is precisely this vulnerability and unrequited love that is most exquisitely translated into music by the French composer Jules Massenet in the opera based on Goethe's immortal novel. With his sensitive melodies, Massenet manages to give young Werther's love for the already estranged Charlotte a glimmer of possible happiness. The music acts as a light in the darkness and a possible lifeline, while the infatuated Werther slowly but surely moves towards the abyss and the realization that even the greatest love is not always reciprocated.

"The most beautiful, honest and saddest thing one has experienced on this stage in recent years," wrote the press when the production premiered at the Zurich Opera.Werther is staged by one of the most sought-after European opera directors of the time, Tatjana Gürbaca. She has created a psychologically intense performance full of visual beauty, where the narrow space becomes a symbol of both Werther's mental state and the conditions of love.

The Royal Danish Theatre's French chief conductor Marie Jacquot leads the Royal Danish Orchestra and interprets Massenet's moving music for the first time.Tenor Jacob Skov Andersen can add another great part in opera history to his repertoire with the title role of Werther, and his beloved Charlotte is sung by the Royal Danish Opera's mezzo-soprano Elisabeth Jansson.

Werther is sung in French with Danish and English subtitles.
