In 2016, a family in a small town northwest of Istanbul discovered a tombstone hidden beneath the floorboards of their old house. The tombstone, believed to be of Greek origin, triggered a journey into a forgotten chapter of Turkish history: the forced population exchange between Greece and Turkey in 1923.
Etched with Cyrillic letters, the tombstone recounts the life of Chrysoula Rodaki, who passed away in 1887. Thus began director Kerem Soyyilmaz's quest to find her descendants. His search took him to local archives, where he uncovered his own family's connection to the historical events, as well as to abandoned villages and conversations with elderly locals. Soyyilmaz also received significant support from the Greek community across the border, highlighting the shared history between the two nations.
"Searching for Rodakis" is a Danish-Tukish co-production that takes place in Turkey and Greece that aims to reconnect people with their past, shedding light on stories often overlooked in the pursuit of national narratives. Through personal experiences, the film explores how history shapes our identities and relationships.
One of the selected projects of Danske Film Institute's Filmværkstedet / København, the film has been recognized with several awards, including "The Best Documentary Film" award at the Adana Golden Boll International Film Festival in Turkey, and an Honorable Mention at the Aegean Docs Festival in Athens, Greece.
