Readings on the beach with Stephen Buoro and Kit Fan

Kick off your beach day with an energizing boost of literature!

Bornholm Island is a popular summer destination for Danes and other tourists thanks to its gorgeous sandy beaches, making the beach an essential location for our new, Bornholm-based literary festival. This morning event at Sydøst for Paradis beach cafe welcomes two rising literary stars. First, Nigerian novelist STEPHEN BUORO will read excerpts from his stunning debut novel, The Five Sorrowful Mysteries of Andy Africa. Named a Best of the Year Book by NPR, and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes, The Five Sorrowful Mysteries of Andy Africa is "animated by a lively voice and a spiritual vision," according to The New Yorker, providing "a touching critique of the false promise of Western transcendence [in Africa]."
Next, we will hear Hong Kong native KIT FAN read poems from his latest collection, The Ink Cloud Reader. An esteemed novelist and poet in the UK, Kit Fan's latest poetry collection has already been shortlisted for multiple literary honors including the T.S. Eliot Prize. Join us to hear Kit Fan read from The Ink Cloud Reader, which The Guardian has called "a moving, lyrically potent collection charting the interconnected impacts of political and personal fracture."
Following the readings participants can ask questions, discuss politics and power in literature, and more. Afterwards, all are invited to linger with us on the beach for more conversation (or a nap! or swim! or beach reading!).
A drink at Sydøst for Paradis is included in the ticket.
STEPHEN BUORO was born in Nigeria in 1993. His debut novel, The Five Sorrowful Mysteries of Andy Africa, was lauded by The Economist as being 'among the best' coming-of-age stories in contemporary African literature. It was shortlisted for the 2023 Nero Book Awards in the 'Debut Fiction' category and was a finalist for the L. A. Times Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction. Stephen lives in Norwich, United Kingdom.
