They were formed and are based in Copenhagen and plays mostly Rebetiko songs of highest calibre mixed with traditional songs from all over Greece. Rebetiko music thrived between the late 1800's until the 1950's in urban culture, flourishing in factories for the proletarians, prisons for outlaws and ghetto related places called tekedes for ethnic minorities and lumpen-proletarians. These locales fostered free expression and spontaneous creativity birthing this cultural phenomenon that was recently added to UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2017. Rebetiko songs reveal the social and economic conditions of urban life expressed by the marginalized people in these early industrialized urban environments of Athens, Thessaloniki, and Constantinople as well as of central ports of the time including Smyrna, Piraeus and Ermoupoli.
